The University of Bristol is the 49th best university in the world (QS World University rankings 2020) and is one of the most popular universities in the UK. Associated with 13 Nobel Prize winners and boasting Winston Churchill as the ex-Chancellor (1929-1965), the University of Bristol is a powerhouse of teaching and research. The University of Bristol is a member of the elite Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities and the Worldwide Universities Network, a grouping of research-led institutions of international standing. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the most recent UK-wide assessment of research quality, conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, nearly 83% of research at Bristol was awarded either the top 4* rating, defined as ‘world leading’, or the 3* rating, classified as ‘internationally excellent’. Our researchers tackle some of the world’s most urgent issues in the areas of health and disease, climate change, food security, energy and social justice. The University has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education – the highest accolade for any academic institution – in recognition of its leading-edge research in obstetric and neonatal practice, which has made a positive difference to mothers and babies throughout the world. The University is made up of 25 academic schools, organised into six faculties: Arts; Engineering; Medical and Veterinary Sciences; Medicine and Dentistry; Science; and Social Sciences and Law and has approximately 14,000 undergraduates and 6,000 postgraduate students from more than 120 countries. The city of Bristol is also a wonderful place to study. Crowned European city of the Year (2009) and European Green Capital for 2015 Bristol has also won plaudits in the national press with The Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live in Britain, naming Bristol as the ‘best city in the UK to live in’ (March 2014). City life in Bristol has also been voted the best in Britain in a major survey of 20,000 university students across the country. The University of Bristol won the ‘City Life’ category at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards (April 2015). Nicknamed ‘The San Francisco of the UK’ by the locals, Bristol is haven for the arts (Banksy), music, festivals, culture, history, shopping and boasts one of the best retention rates of graduates in the UK.
